Measure your sofa + measure your space

When buying a sofa, the first thing to do is to measure your space and the sofa to make sure they fit with each other. Don’t forget to measure the delivery path of the sofa – your doorways, hallways, stairs, and other exterior/interior obstructions.

Measure the seat depth (an average sofa has a seat depth of 24”).
Measure the seat height (most designs are between 18”and 20”).
The most important dimension is the width. How many people do you want to seat on your sofa? What width can your room accommodate?

Who will use the sofa?

Keep in mind who the sofa will be occupied by. Do you have kids or pets? If yes, should you really go for a pristine, white velvet sofa? Perhaps a brown faux leather sofa would be easier to clean. If you are placing your loveseat beside or close to other seating, make sure the arm, leg, back, and seat heights are roughly the same.

Create a conversation area with a loveseat and a sofa, or with two loveseats either facing or at a right angle to each other.

The quality of genuine leather itself varies greatly. For example, you might have seen labels, such as top grain or genuine, on leather items. They indicate the quality of the different types of genuine leather.

Here’s a quick overview of some of the types of leather available in the market to make it easier for you to choose the one that’s right for you.

Leather

Leather tanning is perhaps one of the oldest industries across human civilization. Genuine leather (or just leather) is usually cow, sheep, or goat skin which undergoes various processes: tanning, crusting, and a layer of coating or finishing.

There are four primary types of genuine leather based on the treatment process: aniline leather, semi-aniline leather, pigmented leather, and nubuck leather.

Aniline Leather

Do you want a natural-looking leather finish, with all the unique characteristics of the hide? Then, this is the leather finish for you.

Full-aniline or pure-aniline leather does not receive any surface pigment and because it lacks this protective coating, it is much softer and develops a natural patina over time.

Semi-Aniline Leather

Do you want the softest, most natural leather upholstery but with a bit of protection? While carrying the softness and natural finish of full-aniline, semi-aniline has an additional thin protective topcoat which is added to it. This protects it from wear and staining.

This topcoat makes furniture with semi-aniline leather appear more uniform and softer but with somewhat better protection from staining and fading.

Pigmented Leather

This is the most durable of real leather finishes as it contains a polymer coating with pigments. Do you have children or pets but still want the luxury of real leather furniture? Then, pigmented leather is perfect for you as it has increased durability and is scratch and fade-resistant.

Nubuck Leather

Bonded Leather

While leather match just matches real leather pieces with faux leather pieces, bonded leather actually mixes real and synthetic materials into a single fabric! Bonded leather refers to the fabric made by mixing bonding materials to shredding genuine leather scraps/fiber.

Bi-cast Leather

Quite similar to bonded leather, bi-cast leather is formed when a layer of split/thin or flawed leather is sealed with a top layer of polyurethane. DIY TV Installation and Wall Mounting

There are three important considerations when preparing to mount your TV:

The location and placement of the TV.
Ensuring it is placed at an appropriate angle just above the eye level.
The viewing distance (as mentioned before) between the TV and the sofa.

If you already have a TV entertainment unit in your living room, make sure you buy the right size TV for it. If your entertainment unit has a platform for you to rest your TV on it, you can go ahead and use a table mount for your TV. However, if you want to wall mount your TV, you have a few options for how you can do that.

Wall Mounting

Here’s how you can install your TV by mounting it on a wall.

First, you have to select a TV mount. There are essentially three types:
Stationary mounts: These keep the television in a stationary position against the wall.
Tilting mounts: These mounts enable you to manually tilt the TV up or down once it is mounted.
Full-motion mounts:These types of mounts can move in all directions. You can tilt the screen up and down, or turn it left and right. They work for every viewing angle.
Second, mark the space on the wall. Once you’ve selected an ideal location for the TV, mark (lightly using pencil) the pilot holes of where the TV will be fixed and where the corners of the TV will be. Ensure the markings are even.
Third, drill and attach. Drill the holes where you had made the markings and attach the TV mount brackets on the wall.
Fourth, attach the mounting plate to the back of the TV and carefully mount the TV to the wall.

Ensure that the seats are as much to the centre of the screen as possible. The distance between the seats and screen depends on the size of the screen. Do not place seats too close as it will spoil the viewing experience.

Especially, if you are buying a new fridge which is bigger, measure the entry passage to your home and kitchen. Check if it can fit through doorways. Measure and check tight turns and angles. Ensure there is enough space for the refrigerator’s doors to swing open, and always leave a minimum of one-inch clearance around the sides and the back of the refrigerator for adequate airflow. When To Buy

When is it time to buy a new washer and/or dryer? Here are a few hints that maybe it’s the right time to start shopping.

Are you tired of hauling loads of clothes to the laundromat, and you’ve confirmed you have access in your current home to water and electrical hookups required to install a washer and or dryer?
Is your current washer and/or dryer getting older, and you are wondering how long it may last? According to recent articles from CNET and Consumer Reports, the average lifespan of a washing machine may be around ten years.

Here are the measurements you’ll need to keep handy while shopping for washers and dryers: Height of location where you want to place the washer and dryer, depth of the same spot from front to back, width across the same area.

You’ll need to allow extra space for the following:

Allow some room between machines if you will be placing them side by side.
You’ll need some extra space between the back of each machine and the wall to allow for plumbing hookup and adequate ventilation.
Remember to consider where the doors will swing open and how much space you will need on the top or side of each machine to load or empty the machine.

Capacity

How big is the laundry load going to be? A weekend load from a family of two, or an almost daily maximum capacity load for five or more people? Generally, more people = more dirty laundry.

A small washer is usually around 2 – 3 cubic feet and can roughly hold around 8 pounds of clothes.
A medium-sized washer is usually 3 to 4 cubic feet and holds approximately 11 pounds of laundry.
A large washer is 4 to 6.2 cubic feet and can hold more than 15 pounds.

An average family of four or more may need a large washer and dryer, while a couple may only need a small to mid-sized one.

Comforter Test

There is a simple way of deciding the clothes dryer capacity best suited to your needs. Check the cubic feet of a dryer and check if your biggest comforter (usually 4 cubic feet or larger) can tumble-dry comfortably.

Front Load or Top Load

Top Load Washers

A top load washer features a mainstream, traditional design that has been around for a long time.

One of the best features of top loaders is that you can add forgotten items even after the cycle has started. These washers also offer faster regular wash and rinse cycles. Keep in mind though that top loaders use a bit more water than their front-loading counterparts.

Front Load Washers

Is saving water and energy one of your main priorities? If yes, you should go for a front loader.

Front load washers are the result of new technology and design that automatically regulates the amount of water needed for a load while being gentle on clothes. They reduce water consumption by up to 40% according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Front load washers usually have a bigger capacity than a standard top load machine. Many of them also come with an optional steam self-cleaning feature.

Front load washers get clothes clean not by an agitator or impeller but rather a tumbling action similar to a dryer. They also have paddles located on the drum that lift the clothes in and out of the water.

Some considerations are that these washers require HE (high-efficiency) detergent. Also, they need routine care and cleaning as they are susceptible to mold if not cleaned regularly.

Energy and Efficiency

High Efficiency (HE) Washers

Want to conserve even more water and energy? High-efficiency (HE) washers refer to all washers with an HE-setting and can reduce the amount of water used for washing clothes by about 80% and energy up to 65%. They can also wash more laundry at one time than other washers.

Tip: Only use HE detergent (with higher concentrate and low-sudsing) in these machines.

Dryers and Energy

While all dryers will eventually get the job done, an inefficient dryer takes longer, uses more heat, and costs more. While all dryers use an electric fan to circulate heated air and an electric motor to tumble clothes to dry them, they can either be powered by a gas line or an electricity line.

Let’s look at some basic aspects of a dryer that can make your buying decision a bit easier.

Gas Dryers

Gas dryers connect to your natural gas connection to generate the heat needed and dry your clothes. They plug into a three-prong 110-volt electrical outlet for power. These dryers require an external exhaust vent. They heat up faster and dry your clothes faster than electric dryers.

With a gas dryer, you would probably need to get the gas line and venting installed by a trained professional.

Electric Dryers

Electric dryers need a dedicated three-or four-prong, 240-volt outlet. All heating and drying operations are powered electrically. Almost all electric dryers need an external vent.
