Measure your sofa + measure your space

When buying a sofa, the first thing to do is to measure your space and the sofa to make sure they fit with each other. Don’t forget to measure the delivery path of the sofa – your doorways, hallways, stairs, and other exterior/interior obstructions.

Measure the seat depth (an average sofa has a seat depth of 24”).
Measure the seat height (most designs are between 18”and 20”).
The most important dimension is the width. How many people do you want to seat on your sofa? What width can your room accommodate?

Who will use the sofa?

Keep in mind who the sofa will be occupied by. Do you have kids or pets? If yes, should you really go for a pristine, white velvet sofa? Perhaps a brown faux leather sofa would be easier to clean. Do you have a house full of rambunctious kids who love jumping on the sofas? Then, pay closer attention to the frame and suspension.

How many people do you need to seat?

You want to make sure that your sofa doesn’t take up the whole room or that the room doesn’t swallow your sofa.That being said, you also need to look at how many people you expect to entertain in your space. Accent Chair: Seats one

The most flexible piece of furniture, these can either be standalones (example, recliners), used in pairs, or used to complement a 3-seater sofa. There are so many different kinds of accent chairs. You can even pair it with an ottoman to create the perfect lounge seat.

Loveseat: As the name suggests, it seats two people

The loveseat is a multipurpose piece of furniture. It can be used in lieu of a larger sofa in smaller rooms. In a more spacious room, it can be placed next to a larger sofa as a complementary piece. If you are placing your loveseat beside or close to other seating, make sure the arm, leg, back, and seat heights are roughly the same.

Create a conversation area with a loveseat and a sofa, or with two loveseats either facing or at a right angle to each other.

The loveseat is a multipurpose piece of furniture. It can be used in lieu of a larger sofa in smaller rooms. While loveseats generally fit two people, it does not necessarily mean that every loveseat size is the same. Loveseats generally measure between 50” to 70” approximately.

Settee: A settee is similar to a love seat.

Originating from the Old English word setl, a settee used to be a long bench with a high back and arms. Settees are now upholstered and are usually designed to seat two people.

3-Seater: Seats three to four people

Usually measuring between 72” and 84”, 3-seaters are the mainstay of most living rooms. Choose your style: The 3-seater sets the style tone for the entire living room.

Sectional Sofa: Seats five or more

Sectionals provide enough seating for the whole family or a bevy of friends. They help define a space and bring structure to it. However, since sectionals take up a lot more floor space than say a 3-seater, it’s best to go through these buying considerations before making your decision: Size of your space: This helps you decide how big and spread out your sectional sofa can be.

Now, if you are a normal shopper, you would think leather upholstery is leather upholstery, right? Or perhaps, you know that some furniture has genuine leather while others have faux leather. However, there are a lot of other options than just these two.

The quality of genuine leather itself varies greatly. For example, you might have seen labels, such as top grain or genuine, on leather items. They indicate the quality of the different types of genuine leather.

Here’s a quick overview of some of the types of leather available in the market to make it easier for you to choose the one that’s right for you.

Leather

Leather tanning is perhaps one of the oldest industries across human civilization. Genuine leather (or just leather) is usually cow, sheep, or goat skin which undergoes various processes: tanning, crusting, and a layer of coating or finishing.

There are four primary types of genuine leather based on the treatment process: aniline leather, semi-aniline leather, pigmented leather, and nubuck leather.

Aniline Leather

Do you want a natural-looking leather finish, with all the unique characteristics of the hide? Then, this is the leather finish for you.

Full-aniline or pure-aniline leather does not receive any surface pigment and because it lacks this protective coating, it is much softer and develops a natural patina over time.

Semi-Aniline Leather

Do you want the softest, most natural leather upholstery but with a bit of protection? While carrying the softness and natural finish of full-aniline, semi-aniline has an additional thin protective topcoat which is added to it. This protects it from wear and staining.

This topcoat makes furniture with semi-aniline leather appear more uniform and softer but with somewhat better protection from staining and fading.

Pigmented Leather

This is the most durable of real leather finishes as it contains a polymer coating with pigments. Do you have children or pets but still want the luxury of real leather furniture? Then, pigmented leather is perfect for you as it has increased durability and is scratch and fade-resistant.

Nubuck Leather

This is top-quality leather with a soft suede finish. It is best to use this for areas with access only to adults and while it is more durable than suede, it still needs to be used with care.

Faux Leather

Considered a good synthetic alternative, faux leather looks and feels like genuine leather. Many people prefer faux leather mainly because no animals are harmed in the making of the material. Another advantage of faux leather is that it has an even, consistent coloring throughout as it is machine-made.

Faux leather is made from two materials: Polyurethane (PU) or vinyl.

Polyurethane (PU)is very versatile and can be used to replicate leather, suede, and a number of materials. It comes in an assortment of colors and is extremely durable.
Vinyl is similar to PU and is UV fade resistant.

Leather Match

Leather match furniture is a blend of synthetic and genuine leather. Typically, all the parts of the furniture which touches your body, is made of real leather while faux leather is used on the sides and back.

Faux leather designed to perfectly match the real leather pieces is usually made of vinyl, microfiber, or suede. The end result is classy furniture that looks like it is all leather.

Bonded Leather

While leather match just matches real leather pieces with faux leather pieces, bonded leather actually mixes real and synthetic materials into a single fabric! Bonded leather refers to the fabric made by mixing bonding materials to shredding genuine leather scraps/fiber.

When bonded to good PU material, the end product looks so authentic that it can be difficult to differentiate it from real leather. Bonded leather is environmentally friendly and delivers consistent fabric with no natural defects.

Bi-cast Leather

Quite similar to bonded leather, bi-cast leather is formed when a layer of split/thin or flawed leather is sealed with a top layer of polyurethane. This plastic coating makes bi-cast leather easier to clean and maintain. The polyurethane coating provides great variety in color, good texture, and super-strength.

There are three important considerations when preparing to mount your TV:

The location and placement of the TV.
Ensuring it is placed at an appropriate angle just above the eye level.
The viewing distance (as mentioned before) between the TV and the sofa.

If you already have a TV entertainment unit in your living room, make sure you buy the right size TV for it. If your entertainment unit has a platform for you to rest your TV on it, you can go ahead and use a table mount for your TV. However, if you want to wall mount your TV, you have a few options for how you can do that.

Wall Mounting

Here’s how you can install your TV by mounting it on a wall.

First, you have to select a TV mount. There are essentially three types:
Stationary mounts: These keep the television in a stationary position against the wall.
Tilting mounts: These mounts enable you to manually tilt the TV up or down once it is mounted.
Full-motion mounts:These types of mounts can move in all directions. You can tilt the screen up and down, or turn it left and right. They work for every viewing angle.
Second, mark the space on the wall. Once you’ve selected an ideal location for the TV, mark (lightly using pencil) the pilot holes of where the TV will be fixed and where the corners of the TV will be. Ensure the markings are even.
Third, drill and attach. Drill the holes where you had made the markings and attach the TV mount brackets on the wall.
Fourth, attach the mounting plate to the back of the TV and carefully mount the TV to the wall.
